How Can Traffic Engineering and Management Help in Making Indian Roads Safer? | IRTE

How critical do you think is the role of traffic engineering and management in making the Indian roads safer? Extremely vital, we say. Efficient movement of all types of traffic, from motorised and non-motorised (animal driven vehicles, bicycles, etc.), to pedestrian, is crucial for the smooth running of the roads and highways. And for the safety of all road users. We need modern and evolved traffic systems in place which ensure a smooth and efficient flow of traffic. These can be put in place with the help of extensive research which results in dynamic & innovative designing of the roads. In short,   traffic engineering and management  is the need of the hour. So, what is traffic engineering and management? It is a branch of engineering that is based on planning and designing the flow of traffic on the roads, streets, highways and the tertiary roads. Adjoining lands, links with other modes of transportation also come within the purview of  traffic engineer

Importance of Effective Accident Investigation in Making the Road Network Safer | IRTE

The single-most critical aim of an accident investigation should be prevention. As many as 410 people die, and 6400 get injured seriously on Indian roads every day. These are serious numbers when plotted as yearly figure – the population of many small countries across the globe! Imagine, it’s like wiping out an entire country!  Sadly, not much is being done about it as human life doesn’t seem to have much value in our country. Purpose of accident investigation Multiple factors are responsible for road accidents, and it can rarely be attributed to a single cause. 1. The purpose of an  accident investigation procedure  is to find out the cause of the accident and take pre-emptive steps to control or eliminate similar accidents from happening in the future. 2. While the primary purpose of an accident investigation is to punish the errant drivers and discourage them and others from driving rashly, there are more reasons like deciding punitive damages, insurance claims, etc.

Why Should Road Safety Education Be an Integral Part of a Kids’ Learning? | IRTE

Road safety education should be an integral part of a growing child’s education, be it at home or school. It is vital to drive home the importance of obeying traffic rules and regulations early in life. Teaching kids and young adults the basic traffic rules and inculcating in them a habit of road safety will help in driving a positive change in the society at large. Importance of Road Safety Education for Children We cannot accompany our kids everywhere and must teach them to become alert and be conscious of their safety. One such area where we should educate them is road safety. From a young age itself, we must explain the importance of a few fundamental road safety rules to them. Sadly, kids can longer cycle without a care on the streets. The increasing number of cars, buses, scooters, cycles, motorcycles, people etc. has led to jams, errant driving and an unsafe road environment. Poor road traffic management, roads in a dismal state, lack of proper signage are crucial re

Importance of a Scientific and Efficient Traffic Enforcement in India | IRTE

Image
405 people are killed in crashes and a mind-blowing 6.2 billion traffic violations take place on Indian roads every day.  Poor and inadequate road infrastructure and inefficient and faulty traffic enforcement systems are significant contributors to these numbers. The most significant role of traffic enforcement is reducing the number of severe and fatal accidents, the secondary being, ensuring a free flow of traffic. To make that a reality, we need efficient, effective and scientific systems in place. In developed countries, traffic enforcement agencies get the support of civic or road authorities to ensure a smooth flow of traffic while minimising the number of severe and fatal accidents. However, in developing countries like India, the responsibility of traffic enforcement lies with the traffic police, a significant number of whom do not have adequate training. It makes their job tougher and leads to chaos on the roads. Therefore, it is imperative to provide them with

How Technology is changing Traffic Law Enforcement! | IRTE

Image
Technology advancements have come as a blessing for traffic law enforcement agencies. The rapid expansion of technology has set the stage for new, innovative tools that help the officers to serve their communities better. To adequately curb the dangerous driving behaviour on the road - such as running red lights and speeding,  road traffic law enforcement authorities require tools that can help them not only monitor traffic speeds, but also catch the faulty motorists in the act.  The technology needs to be reliable and accurate enough to withstand the challenging environments and dynamic weather conditions that exist on highways and roads. Radar cameras and speed measurement systems are being used to deter speeding vehicles and thus reduce accident rates on the road. ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) is applied to reduce the human resource cost for detecting traffic violations.  Traffic law enforcement equipment:  In the past, law enforcement relied on devices such

Why is Road Safety Important? | Let’s Give Life a Chance | IRTE

Image
“ Why is road safety important ?” you ask?? Well, because road accidents are the Number 1 cause of death for children and young adults aged 5-29, and the 8 th leading cause of death for all age groups, across the globe, that’s why! Road Accident Statistics: Global & Indian Scenario Road safety is a grave issue worldwide and is an excellent opportunity to save lives, but somehow it does not receive the attention it deserves A study by the World Health Organisation (WHO) puts the figure of deaths from road traffic crashes to 1.35 million a year – that is around 3700 people dying globally every day! The study further states that between 20-50 million people suffer road accident-related injuries, including disability. Under-developed and developing nations bear most of these fatalities. Chief factors for this trend are rapid urbanisation, poor safety standards, lack of enforcement and corruption; sub-standard safety signage and equipment, lack of training – both i

Urgent Need for an Efficient Road Infrastructure and Meaningful Traffic Rules and Regulations | Towards Road to Safety | IRTE

Image
An alarming 410 deaths take place on Indian roads every day. That’s around 1,50,000 in a year - equivalent to the entire population of many small-sized countries in the world. So virtually, it’s like a country being wiped out! So, wherein lies the problem? Traffic rules and regulations not being followed? Poor road engineering? Faulty signages and traffic signals? Inadequate and outdated road safety equipment? Lack of training? Inconclusive and skewed rules? Corrupt law enforcers? A general apathy in the system? The answer is, all the above. There is an urgent need to look at our country’s road network in entirety – roads, equipment, vehicles and people and make drastic changes quickly. The Indian roads and the Indian people are in dire need of a reprieve. The alarming increase in the numbers of accidents and deaths indicate that merely increasing fines and penalties are futile and self-limiting. Only when coupled with improving the road infrastructure can the traffic laws in Ind
