How Technology is changing Traffic Law Enforcement! | IRTE

Technology advancements have come as a blessing for traffic law enforcement agencies. The rapid expansion of technology has set the stage for new, innovative tools that help the officers to serve their communities better.
To adequately curb the dangerous driving behaviour on the road - such as running red lights and speeding, road traffic law enforcement authorities require tools that can help them not only monitor traffic speeds, but also catch the faulty motorists in the act.
The technology needs to be reliable and accurate enough to withstand the challenging environments and dynamic weather conditions that exist on highways and roads.
Radar cameras and speed measurement systems are being used to deter speeding vehicles and thus reduce accident rates on the road. ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) is applied to reduce the human resource cost for detecting traffic violations.
Traffic law enforcement equipment:
In the past, law enforcement relied on devices such as electronic speed limit signs and cameras attached to a radar unit that measured a vehicle’s speed. Image capturing was triggered whenever it detected any speeding vehicle. For video-based technology, a human operator nearby was required to monitor the videos and pictures and pick out traffic law violators.
However, over the years, the equipment used in traffic law enforcement have developed tremendously. With the development of radar technology, speed detection accuracy grew.
Cameras now produce high-resolution videos and images, arming traffic law enforcement officials with real-time views of ongoing events on the roads, making them capable of tracking multiple scenarios at a time.

Video analytics, such as automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), are now widely used in this sector. It not only minimised the need for human intervention but also reduced the risk of human error.

INTERCEPTOR® is the intellectual property of the Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) that has been developed and regularly upgraded in technology for over the last 23 years considering the needs and problems faced by the police departments over this period.

The Interceptor has been conceptualised and developed to meet multiple objectives, namely evidence-based traffic law enforcement, enforcement on a mobile platform, traffic education, road and infrastructure survey and deterrent.
Bottom Line-
No doubt, traffic police departments are being tasked with increasingly complicated challenges every day. Road traffic law enforcement agencies around the country have recognized the value of tech-savvy tools and how these can make a mark on traffic law enforcement departments around the country.

These new and improved tools and gadgets are becoming available to help traffic officers prevent crime.
