Why is Road Safety Important? | Let’s Give Life a Chance | IRTE

“Why is road safety important?” you ask?? Well, because road accidents are the Number 1 cause of death for children and young adults aged 5-29, and the 8th leading cause of death for all age groups, across the globe, that’s why!
Road Accident Statistics: Global & Indian Scenario
Road safety is a grave issue worldwide and is an excellent opportunity to save lives, but somehow it does not receive the attention it deserves
A study by the World Health Organisation (WHO) puts the figure of deaths from road traffic crashes to 1.35 million a year – that is around 3700 people dying globally every day! The study further states that between 20-50 million people suffer road accident-related injuries, including disability.

Under-developed and developing nations bear most of these fatalities.

 Chief factors for this trend are rapid urbanisation, poor safety standards, lack of enforcement and corruption; sub-standard safety signage and equipment, lack of training – both in drivers and law enforcers; distracted and fatigued driving; failure to wear seat belts and helmets; jaywalkers and driving/riding under the influence of intoxicating substance.

 In India alone, as per the government data, almost 1.5 lakh people lose their lives in road accidents annually. It translates to 53 road accidents and 17 deaths on Indian roads every hour!

 The above statistics are an alarming reflection of the grim state of affairs. There is an urgent need to take preventive and corrective measures.

 There is a need for quick and effective interventions, robust policies and enforcement, quality road engineering supported by powerful public awareness campaigns. These can save millions of lives in the coming times.

 To spread road safety awareness, countries must pool their expertise and help each other understand why is road safety important in making this world a safer and better place.

An alarming 410 deaths take place on Indian roads every day. That’s around 1,50,000 in a year - equivalent to the entire population of many small-sized countries in the world.
