Traffic Safety Rules – The Glue that Binds Road and Safety

 Do you believe that following traffic safety rules help in making you, as a road user, safer? How critical are they in making our roads and its users safe? 

There are a staggering 6.2 billion traffic violations by motorised traffic on Indian roads every day. Yes, 6.2 billion every single day! 

Road accidents are the number 1 killers on our roads. Nearly 1.5 lakh people die on Indian roads every year. That is equivalent to wiping out the entire population of some countries!
These alarming figures are a result of the combined inefficiencies of many factors and utter disregard for human life. Inefficient traffic management system, faulty road engineering, outdated, broken traffic equipment, the rampant breaking of traffic safety rules, and general apathy towards human life are the fundamental reasons behind this chaos on Indian roads.

Some of these factors are not in our hands, as road users, but a few like following the traffic rules and regulations will definitely go a long way towards making us safer– as drivers, passengers, pedestrians, cyclists, any which way.



What is the importance of road safety rules?

  • Provide us with the essential instructions and information on the condition of the roads.
  • Provide us valuable inputs on good road user behaviour.
  • Help in the smooth flow of traffic by providing relevant information on traffic jams, speed limits on different kind of roads, the presence of ‘go-slow’ zones, diversions etc. to name a few.
  • Ensure discipline on the roads by laying down rules and regulations and penalising and punishing the deviants.

It is critical, as responsible road users and citizens of India that we are not only aware of the traffic safety rules and regulations but also follow them, to ensure our safety and those of our fellow road users.
The road and traffic safety rules, if taken seriously, can help in significantly lowering the number of accidents and dates on Indian roads.
Yes, to make a more significant impact, stringent measures need to be taken, and all other contributing factors need to go through a dramatic upheaval.
Our safety, after all, begins with us.
